Lewis Hamilton threw a bombshell for Mercedes at the start of the 2024 season, when he announced his switch to Ferrari for the following year. Hamilton had a mediocre final stint at the Silver Arrows last year. Now, Toto Wolff has dismissed claims of the Briton being more focused on his move to Maranello.

The seven-time world champion grew increasingly frustrated over the course of last season. Lewis Hamilton was fed up with his continuous struggles in Qualifying. So much so, that he was ready to quit the campaign even before the end of the season.

Toto Wolff was asked if the Briton was already thinking about his future at Maranello. The Austrian billionaire gave a straightforward reply. Wolff made it clear that Hamilton was too professional to already have had Ferrari in his head as he completed his final season with Brackley.

I don’t think he already had the head of Ferrari, he’s too professional for that.

Lewis Hamilton can ‘postpone’ performance decline

Hamilton is now 40 years old. This has raised doubts over his performance for his upcoming stint at Ferrari. However, Wolff insisted that a top athlete like Lewis Hamilton, can postpone such a decline as he is completely focused on his goal. The Mercedes boss pointed out that Fernando Alonso has managed to be successful in this regard.

I believe that a top athlete like Lewis, completely focused on what he does, can postpone the decline for a long time. It can be seen well in Fernando Alonso, with all his experience he is still fast. And it’s similar to what happens with Lewis.

Toto Wolff explained

Certainly, Lewis Hamilton remains fully determined to perform for Ferrari this year. The seven-time world champion hopes to fight for the championship with the Prancing Horse. Though, it remains to be seen if the Briton can get back his form after a difficult couple of years in the ground-effect era with the Silver Arrows.
