Toto Wolff is one of the many people who are still not over Max Verstappen‘s controversial title win in the 2021 season. Lewis Hamilton was driving for Mercedes, led by Wolff, and the latter firmly believed the driver was robbed of his record-breaking eighth title win.

Now, amid the possibility of Verstappen winning the 2025 season’s driver’s title, the Austrian’s partner, Susie Wolff, has recalled incidents of Abu Dhabi 2021 and fired some shots at Michael Masi, the then-race director.

Michael Masi was definitely a controversial race director, and his antics did not go unnoticed. Toto Wolff‘s anger in the moment meant that Masi’s decisions were looked at thoroughly. Subsequently, in February 2022, the race director was fired from his position with immediate effect.

Despite the controversy being in the past now, Wolff still hasn’t moved on from the struggles back then and has once again criticized the Australian. Toto Wolff insisted that he had not witnessed such a great loss of control of a situation like it happened in Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Wolff continued that Michael Masi, a ‘lunatic’, destroyed the record of the greatest champion of all time. Lewis Hamilton couldn’t break Michael Schumacher‘s coveted seven title win records because of the controversies back then.

I have not experienced the loss of control of a situation since I was a child, There is one lunatic who can basically destroy the record of the greatest champion of all time.

Toto Wolff said, as reported by motorsport.com.

Susie Wolff joined her husband and continued that she was in disbelief for quite some time after the events that unfolded that night in Abu Dhabi. The fact that one single person’s interpretation of the rules allowed him to manipulate the outcome in such a way was definitely shocking. Wolff pointed out that the emotions were so high that it sat heavily with her for quite some time after the incident had taken place in 2021.

It was disbelief. That one person’s decision to interpret the rules, in a way that they had never been interpreted before, could have caused such an outcome. It sat so heavily with me for a long time afterwards.

Susie Wolff labels Max Verstappen ‘deserving champion’ for the 2021 season

Throughout the year, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had driven on par with one another and did not make life easier for each other on track. The entire season was filled with controversial moments, but the title battle came to the very last race. Both drivers had driven sensationally throughout the year and deserved the race win. But still, the Wolff couple was upset about the events that unfolded over the evening.

Susie Wolff recalled that she was very upset that eve, not because Max Verstappen won the driver’s title. She clarified that the Dutchman was a deserving championship winner and she had nothing against the latter.

However, Mrs. Wolff was upset with the way everything happened that night. The F1 Academy Director backtracked on her words and claimed that Lewis Hamilton was deserving of the race win and ultimately the championship that day.

I was so upset in Abu Dhabi, and not because Max won. He was a deserving champion. It’s nothing against Max, It was the way it happened. The fact that Lewis was so deserving on that day. He was the better driver. He was winning that race

Susie Wolff added.

Regardless of the controversies back then and an investigation into the matter, Max Verstappen was hailed as the rightful championship winner for the 2021 season. The governing body believed that Michael Masi made the best possible decision in the intense moment. As such, despite firing Masi from his position, the decision stayed the same with no changes to it.
