Mercedes recently appointed Valtteri Bottas as the reserve driver from the team after Mick Schumacher decided to leave the position. Schumacher did not get a chance to return to Formula 1 with Brackley despite waiting for over three years with the team. Hence, the German driver will focus on his WEC duties with Alpine as Toto Wolff revealed the reason for this situation.
Lewis Hamilton‘s exit left a vacancy at Mercedes which took a lot of months to fill. The German carmaker completely overlooked the reserve driver Mick Schumacher and decided to acquire the prodigy, Kimi Antonelli. As a result, Schumacher quit the team after waiting for so long without any positive outcome.
Toto Wolff reckoned that the German had reached a point where waiting more made very little sense. The Mercedes boss believed that Schumacher had made the right call on his future. Wolff highlighted that the 25-year-old would run in some other motorsport category with great success.
Mick Schumacher never had the ‘right environment’ in Formula 1
Mick Schumacher debuted with the Haas F1 team during their trying times as the team was unable to amass any notable feats under him. Schumacher hoped for a return to Formula 1 alongside a better team this time around.
However, the situation never allowed the German to return back to the pinnacle of motorsport. Wolff sympathized with the 25-year-old and reckoned that the latter never received an opportunity in the sport in the right environment.
Mercedes has great hopes for Kimi Antonelli to perform well and enable the team to score great results. Schumacher will now be able to completely focus on racing for Alpine in the WEC as Formula 1’s doors close. The German driver is highly likely to make his mark in the WEC racing format despite deeming a mediocre outing in his debut season.
