When F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton pulled off expensive stunt at Met Gala to showcase diversity in fashion industry
Lewis Hamilton made sure the young Black designers get a seat at the table at Met Gala by buying the entire table.

Lewis Hamilton is an iconic figure in the world of Formula 1 thanks to his seven whopping World Championship titles, but the Briton is known all around the world for many other things besides his racing accolades. He is a humanitarian and a philanthropist, and above all, he is an advocate for the Blacks who still get deprived of opportunities because of their skin color. Being the only Black F1 driver on the current grid, Lewis Hamilton has said time and again that he knows what discrimination feels like, and he wants no other Black youngster to face it.
Other than racing in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton’s interest lies in the world of fashion. He has previously claimed that indulging in fashion helps him take a break from the stress of being in such a competitive and dangerous sport as F1. So, it goes without saying that Lewis is a frequent guest at fashion’s biggest night at the invite-only event, the Met Gala. In 2021, Lewis made a blast with his appearance at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art as he bought an entire table to showcase young Black designers at the exclusive event.
Speaking to Vogue about his thoughts behind inviting the Black designers to be included in his Met Gala 2021 group, Lewis Hamilton said, “We’re living in a time where diversity and inclusion are so important. And that’s why I started this organization within my own sport. I realized it’s very similar in the fashion industry. A lot of young brands and designers don’t have the same opportunities, so that’s what really set me off.”

Lewis Hamilton wants to continue his fight to promote diversity in the various fields such as F1 and fashion

Formula 1 is often seen as a European, elitist sport that a racer can only enter into if he is backed by giant sponsors who shower money on him. But Lewis Hamilton is the living example of a Black youngster who once dreamed of becoming an F1 racer after watching his idol Ayrton Senna on the TV. Hamilton has claimed that he had to move past various obstacles to get to the top of the league, and he wants to make the path easier for the young racers who are like him. Thus, in 2021, he started the ‘Hamilton Commission’ to promote diversity in F1.
In the field of fashion, Lewis has left his mark by his huge stunt at the Met Gala 2021. He wanted to show the world the immense talent of the Black designers, and thus he made sure they get a seat at the table at such an exclusive event. So, he bought at an entire table at the Met to invite the designers Theophilio, Kenneth Nicholson, and Jason Rembert.
