Lately, a string of unfortunate incidents has placed the San Francisco 49ers in a tough spot. The organization’s unwillingness to relocate the training facility, currently situated next to a power substation, created a lot of buzz. The arrest of owner Jed York for trying to hire a prostitute created a nationwide discussion. And more recently, the federal police took a couple of individuals into custody for posing as 49ers members to scam several women.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the FBI arrested Daejon Love, 35, and Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, on August 24 in Boise, Idaho. They were taken into custody after Chan flew from California to meet Love in Boise.

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Oregon and court records, Love forged fictitious identities to meet with several women. He would routinely present himself as a member of the 49ers’ organization. Chan, meanwhile, posed as Love’s financial adviser. Together they sold fictitious investment ideas to defraud women in California, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.

Love had romantic relationships with many of the victims and told them he wanted to build wealth and a future together. Love advertised nonexistent investment vehicles and claimed these investments would generate massive returns for both him and his victims.

Wagoner wrote

Some of the victims loaned Love large amounts of money. When they did not receive a return, Love and Chan blocked them to avoid escalation. FBI estimates Love and Chan scammed around $1.3 million from the 26 victims over a period of four years.

In early August, 24-year-old police discovered Mohamed Coulibaly’s body in the pool of his house in New Jersey. Coulibaly allegedly scammed NFL players of a large sum of money after they invested in his e-commerce business. Coulibaly denied his involvement in the scam before his death.

The 49ers have hit a rough patch off the field

The 49ers’ owner, Jed York, spent a night in jail for trying to buy s**ual favors from a popular adult website. He was released after posting bail. The case remains open.

A league report shows that, on average, the Niners have dealt with more injuries than any other team in the NFL. Last year, an independent study indicated that the electrical substation next to the Niners’ training facility could be weakening players’ tissues, causing the injuries. The Niners hired professionals to investigate the matter. Later, they dismissed the theory.

It was basically a nothing burger. We’re safe, we’re in a safe place of work. The levels are 400-times less than an unsafe zone.

John Lynch said (H/T USA Today)

Players weren’t pleased by Lynch’s announcement. And with good reason. Several players, including marquee WR Mike Evans, have suffered multiple injuries throughout the training camp. TE George Kittle’s rehab time has been pushed back further, making his availability for week one football doubtful.

There’s light at the end of the tunnel. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted that 49ers CEO Al Guido teased that they could move the training facility to a different location because “they are running out of space” in their current location, adjacent to Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers finish their preseason adventure with a victory

On Friday, the Niners were in Sin City for their final exhibition game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Kyle Shanahan rested most of his starters. Mac Jones threw five passes before handing QB duty to Adrian Martinez. Martinez completed 12 of 21 passes for 130 yards. WR Jordan Watkins caught 4 passes for 64 yards. Linebacker Tatum Bethune caught an interception from Raiders rookie Fernando Mendoza. The game ended in an 18-12 victory for the NFC West franchise. The Niners travel to Australia in opening week to play the Los Angeles Rams.
