Luiz to leave Arsenal at the end of this season as he doesn't want to renew his contract

Brazilian defender David Luiz is supposedly leaving the Gunners this summer, after joining from London rivals Chelsea, ending his two-year spell at the Emirates.

The 34-year-old has been at Arsenal for two seasons after joining from London rivals Chelsea where he won the league title, Champions League and two FA Cups. Luiz also won the FA Cup with Arsenal last season under Arteta. The Brazilian began his career with Vitoria in Brazil before joining Benfica after an initial loan spell.

Arsenal had not offered Luiz, 34, a contract extension although it is understood he would not have signed one, having already decided to leave the club.

A meeting between Luiz and Arsenal occured on Friday, where it was decided that he would leave when his contract expires in July – local reports can confirm.

Luiz has not played for Arsenal since earlier this month, after coming off during the win at Newcastle with a hamstring injury.

Luiz is continuing to recover from the injury ahead of Arsenal’s final two matches of the 2020-21 season, against Crystal Palace and Brighton next week. The Brazilian has made 30 appearances in all competitions this season and has been frequently relied upon as manager Mikel Arteta switched between a back four and a back five.

He helped Arsenal win the FA Cup last season, starting in the final, as they beat his former club Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley. Adding to that he also won the Community Shield at the starting of this season, when arsenal defeated then Premier League champions on penalties. This season Luiz looked to mentor a largely inexperienced Arsenal backline consisting of Pablo Mari, Gabriel, Chambers and Englishman Rob Holding which conceded 38 goals in the 36 matches played in the Premier League.

Luiz has claimed on several occasions that he wants to finish his career back at Benfica, adding in April last year: “In football everything changes -what is true today, tomorrow is a lie-but my feeling is not.

“I love Benfica. My dream is to step on the pitch of Estadio de Luz in their colours. Benfica is bigger than any player.”
