“He doesn’t mind…. the crowd booing like mad” – Paul Merson on Watford’s new managerial appointment
Former England manager Roy Hodgson has been officially appointed as Warford’s new manager on a deal until the end of the season. The 74-year old had left his managerial position at Crystal Palace last summer as he declared his retirement from football management.
The Hornets sacked Claudio Ranieri on Monday, the 15th managerial change since the Pozzo family took over the club in 2012 as the club sits two points from safety at 19th in the Premier League Table. Claudio Ranieri lasted only 112 days as Watford head coach before he was sacked after a 3-0 defeat to Norwich.
Talking about Watford’s new managerial appointment, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson appreciated Watford’s decision and said that the new manager brings a lot of experience with him and Watford will put that to use.
Paul said: “What Roy brings is experience, bundles of it. He doesn’t mind playing eleven players in the back and the crowd booing like mad as long as he gets the point and I think that’s what you need at the moment.

Great time for Roy Hodgson’s appointment at Watford
Pundit Darren Bent thinks that although Roy Hodgson did not have the best of time at Crystal Palace, he played a great role in keeping the club from getting relegated.
He said: “I think it is the perfect appointment. Safe hands [who] knows the league at the back of his hands. His last few years at Crystal Palace, it wasn’t the most entertaining. I didn’t enjoy watching Crystal Palace, but he kept them in the Premier League, which is what he was to do.“
Karen Carney further added that the six months is a great time for Roy Hodgson as he would be under no pressure. She says that the manager is in a win-win situation as the team hasn’t been doing well defensively and he has nothing to lose at this point.
Watford has a must-win match away at Burnley coming up on February 5, so Hodgson will be determined to get off to a winning start and heap more pressure on another of the Hornets’ relegation rivals.
