Manchester City look to propose a two-year contract for Sergio Ramos, with Guardiola looking to add experience to his squad

Manchester City is currently monitoring Sergio Ramos’ situation closely and are considering offering him a two-year contract if the defender doesn’t renew at Real Madrid.

Ramos could leave the club later this summer as his contract expires on June 30 and there is no agreement currently in sight with the Madrid club executives. The Spaniard’s current contract dilemma has put plenty of Europe’s top clubs on red alert, including interests from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Ramos, has been in the Spanish capital since 2005, and has led them to five La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies and rescued them on countless occasions but now may finally be on the verge of moving on. At the prime age of 35, Ramos still has something to offer, but Madrid have been unable to convince him to sign a new contract.

Ramos has just one month left on his current contract with Real Madrid and an extension doesn’t seem too likely, given that Madrid club officials are not willing to improve their current offer. Ramos doesn’t want a single-year contract extension, though he agreed to a 10 percent wage cut and Manchester City could take advantage of this situation and add Ramos to their roster.

Some of the top teams across Europe are closely following the situation and are ready to bid for Ramos if his exit is made official. Among those clubs is Manchester City, who are looking to strengthen their backline with a veteran defender for the upcoming season, and Ramos’ Champions League experience would be greatly valued at the Etihad.

Manchester City are looking to offer him a tailored made deal based on the player’s ongoing form and priorities which includes a two-year contract, with the possibility of a third year to be added later if performance allows, or an lucrative alternative of a spell in Major League Soccer at City’s partner club New York City FC.

Ramos made just 15 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid this season, as he struggled with several long-term injuries over the course of the season which saw him being excluded from the Spain squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 by coach Luis Enrique.

Sergio Ramos’ contract with Madrid expires on June 30 and his priority is still to renew with Madrid, but he may consider to move on if an agreement with president Florentino Perez cannot be reached in the coming weeks. A meeting between the Ramos and president is planned for Friday in order to resolve the Spaniard’s future and a definitive decision regarding his future is likely be taken. Real Madrid have just completed the signing of David Alaba from Bayern, who could eventually replace Ramos as a center-back if he ends up leaving the club, as Madrid also seek options in Pau Torres and Jules Kounde.

Eric Garcia has already signed for Barcelona and Nathaniel Ake played only a limited role last season due to injuries, while Aymeric Laporte has gone from automatic pick to substitute over the last two years, playing mostly in cup matches. If the deal comes to fruition Ramos will compete with City’s first-choice defenders John Stones and Ruben Dias at the back.

Guardiola believes that a footballer like Ramos would increase the competitiveness and experience of the squad in high-profile matches, specially in the Champions League, which was found lacking in their defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final. Pep could see value in having that experience in his camp for next season and believes that Ramos could play a Vincent Kompany-style leadership role in the massively under-experienced City squad.
