FC Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets will leave on June 30, the day his current contract with the Blaugrana expires. The Barça captain’s journey will come to an end after 15 seasons in the first team. The mercurial midfielder’s departure was announced through a heartfelt video on Wednesday by the Catalan giants.

According to reports, Saudi Arabia is positioned as the top option for Busquets’ next destination, although the player has not yet made up his mind. The only thing he knows is that he will not continue to play for Barça next season, as he will not be renewing his current contract.

A great career with Barca will come to an end with over 700 games in 18 seasons and becoming the third player with the most games in the history of the club, only surpassed by Leo Messi and Xavi Hernandez. Barcelona’s remaining home games this season are against Real Sociedad on May 20 and then Mallorca two weeks later.

Xavi wants Busquets to stay for one more year because the former Spanish international has been a key player for the Blaugrana as well as the captain and his exit will be a headache for the Barcelona management.

According to reports, Ousmane Dembele is also in consideration to be the next captain of Barcelona along with Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba, and Ter Stegen. The Frenchman, who joined the club in 2017, has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers since the start of 2022.

He has performed exceptionally well in the final third, emerging as a creative force in the Barça team. It is no secret that Xavi rates Dembele quite highly, which is why his name will be nominated for the position of Barcelona’s fourth captain next season. But not only Dembele the club has also considered Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo as well – two key players in Xavi’s team.

Araujo lacks the relative experience of the other three captains, but he is a dominant figure at the back and could become the face of the Barça defense in the years to come. Lewandowski, meanwhile, had only joined the club last summer, but his experience and pedigree are unquestionable. Therefore, it will be interesting to see who ends up becoming the fourth Barcelona captain next season.
