“He has too high a salary” – Fans planning to whistle at Lionel Messi in PSG’s next game after Champions League exit
Fans campaigning for ex-Barcelona star's exit
Lionel Messi has yet to sign a new contract with Paris Sanit-Germain, and club fans plan to whistle at the World Cup winner to protest a possible extension. After parting ways with Barcelona, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Parc des Princes as a free agent in 2021.
While he has remained a vital presence for Argentina, inspiring them to glory in Qatar 2022, the mercurial South American has been accused of not committing fully to club efforts. In 2022-23, Paris Saint-Germain was eliminated from the Champions League. Messi is about to become a target for angry supporters, with no extension to his contract in France in sight.
Leading PSG’s ultra group members told media ahead of a Ligue 1 home date with Rennes: “We will whistle at Messi this Sunday. He has too high a salary in relation to what he offers on the pitch.”
According to rumours, PSG’s fans hold Messi most responsible for their Champions League round of 16 loss to Bayern Munich since he was ineffective in both halves of the match. Notwithstanding, there won’t likely be many demonstrations against Messi during the game against Rennes, and it’s unclear if any jeers will be directed at him before the players take the field, during the game, or during the line-ups.

What lies ahead for PSG and Messi?
Paris Saint-Germain is at the top of Ligue 1, ten points ahead of second-placed Marseille. The Parisians have one hand on the trophy, with only 11 games to go. However, this is not enough for either the owner or the fans. Reports suggest the departure of manager Christophe Galtier and superstar Lionel Messi is likely.
Messi is not the only superstar performer to have fallen short of helping PSG achieve their ultimate goals this season. Brazilian international Neymar Jr. is currently off the field due to a new injury. Kylian Mbappe is “untouchable” by a devoted fan base in the French capital. This is despite having generated plenty of exit talk a year after signing a new contract of his own.
Notwithstanding, the Argentinian is the closest to leaving. He currently has a lucrative offer from Inter Miami, according to reports. Sources close to the player suggest he is not quite ready to leave European football. He is reportedly considering a fairytale reunion with FC Barcelona.
