“Bad decision; Sacked their best coach ever”- Fans react to Crystal Palace sacking Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace fired Patrick Vieira on Friday after almost two years in charge, with relegation looming. The Eagles fired Viera after failing to win a single game in 2023.

In a statement, Palace chairman Steve Parish said: “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made. Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position. We felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status. That said, Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself and all of his colleagues.

Vieira led the team to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final and a respectable 12th-placed finish last season. The statement added, “Patrick has given his all to the club, and we all thank him and his team for their service. We also wish Patrick, Osian, Kristian and Saïd the very best for their futures.”

Palace has confirmed the dismissal of three of Vieira’s coaching staff members: Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson, and Said Aigoun. Dean Kiely will remain in south London as goalkeeping coach, and the search for a new manager is “underway.”

The fans have expressed mixed emotions to see the Arsenal legend go. While some have said that there are not many good managers to take on a relegation battle, some were happy after the miserable run of form since the new year.

Since their 2-0 win against AFC Bournemouth on December 30, 2022, Crystal Palace has yet to experience victory in the Premier League. They have lost seven of their last 12 games and have failed to win the other five, leaving them just three points above the relegation zone. An elimination from the FA Cup after his previous victory in the competition following a third-round loss to Southampton at Selhurst Park contributed to the downfall. The move gives Sunday’s game against Arsenal a little extra punch.

After losing to Sporting on Thursday and exiting Europe, Arsenal must rebound on the eve of the international break. The Gunners are currently five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City. Arsenal, though, has a chance to go into the international break eight points ahead because City is playing in the FA Cup this weekend. A tricky game against managerless Crystal Palace lies ahead.
