Stokes’s professional career started with Arsenal, and in 2006, he went on a productive loan to Falkirk, where he scored 14 goals in 16 SPL outings. He was then sold to Sunderland for £2 million. However, he had trouble keeping his spot in the starting lineup. He moved to Hibernian for £500,000 in August 2009, he returned to Scottish football and netted over 20 goals in his lone full campaign.

Stokes later made a £1.2 million transfer to Celtic.  While playing consistently for the Celtic beneath Neil Lennon’s leadership, he was successful but lost favor under coach Ronny Deila. He spent the latter half of the 2015–16 campaign on loan to Hibernian, contributing to the club’s Scottish Cup victory. In 2020 he played for Livingston in the Scottish Premiership and hasn’t had a club since.

The ex-Arsenal player was once arrested for stalking his ex-girlfriend

Anthony Stokes was arrested in 2019 for sending insulting texts and emails to his ex-girlfriend Eilidh Scott. He also came under fire for poor response to legal proceedings. A court in Dublin ruled that the erstwhile Celtic and Hibs player had failed to respond to inquiries from social workers attempting to compile a background investigation on him.

After conducting a brief hearing, Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen issued an arrest warrant for him. He stated: “These are post-conviction cases. He hasn’t been responding to calls from social work and I will grant a warrant.” Stokes was detained in July by Northern Ireland police, who were aiding Scottish authorities, and was sent on a plane from Belfast to Dundee Airport. He had been summoned to show up in court after missing a previous court hearing after registering positive for Covid-19.

Stokes confessed to a stalking operation in which he targeted Miss Scott with a barrage of nasty messages, sending 100 texts each day on WhatsApp and mail. He called her at, a’s, and a ‘w*e’ and showed up dark at night at her house in Shotts, Lanarkshire, demanding to discover where she was. The harassment attempt spanned from July 2018 through February 2019. Sheriff Allan McKay issued a demand for his detention in June last year:  “He pled guilty and was released on bail, and he has now left the country in breach of bail.”
