Argentina has been crowned world champions after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup on penalties against France. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat trick and became the second player to do so in the FIFA World Cup.

Argentina overcame France 4-2 on penalties after the tally was poised 3-3 in additional time, giving Lionel Messi his first FIFA World Cup victory and “completing football.” Messi netted two goals and Kylian Mbappe three for France. The sole other goal scorer for Argentina was Angel di Maria.
