Before Torres scored a superb double in the opening 7-0 group stage victory over Costa Rica on Wednesday, the Spain coach made the joke. Luis Enrique highlighted that his daughter would chop off his head if Ferran Torres were not selected for the World Cup. The former Manchester City player is seeing Sira Martinez, Enrique’s daughter.

Before the game, when asked who would lead the line, Enrique responded: “Very easy – It’s Mr. Ferran Torres – otherwise my daughter will come after me and chop off my head,”. Despite claims of their familiarity dating back to late last year, the couple just made their romance public earlier this year. Sira is a renowned show-jumper from Spain who resides in Barcelona and is a part of the wealthy Barcelona Royal Polo Club.

In 44 appearances since leaving Man City for Barcelona in January of last year, Torres has 12 goals and seven assists. He has also played frequently for the Spanish national team, and his brace against Costa Rica marked the end of an eight-game goal-less streak.

Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0 to begin their FIFA World Cup campaign

Spain

Spain’s World Cup campaign started quickly as they thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 to win the match. Spain’s top players included Pablo Martin Páez Gavira, Ferran Torres, Marco Asensio, Jordi Alba, Soler Barragán, and Dani Olmo. Particularly Ferran Torres’ two goals, one of which was a penalty, gave Spain a lead that Costa Rica could not overcome.

With goals from Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, and Ferran Torres in the opening 31 minutes, Spain avoided any possibility of an upset after Japan stunned Germany 2-1 in the other Group E encounter. In the second half, goals from Torres, Gavi, Carlos Soler, and Alvaro Morata increased the advantage.

Olmo’s goal made Spain the sixth country to score more than 100 goals throughout the World Cup. It was Spain’s 100th overall. Spain scored seven goals for the first time ever in a World Cup game. According to analytics platform Opta, Spain became the first European country to have two adolescents in the starting lineup of a World Cup game in 60 years when Gavi and Pedri  took the field.
