Netflix signs huge deal with La Liga for a docuseries on 2023-24 season

Online Streaming service Netflix has landed a deal with the Spanish football league La Liga. The streaming service has previously produced some phenomenal sports documentaries like Break Point and Formula 1 series Drive Survive. Netflix will be producing a documentary based on La Liga season 2023/24. The documentary will portray the impact of the sports on the players, coaches, fans and communities.

The documentary is currently in its pre-production phase, with the series featuring the likes of Spanish football giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. La Liga is one of the most popular leagues in European football. Spanish football has dominated the majority of European competition, with clubs like Sevilla, Real Madrid and Barcelona winning plenty of European competitions.

“Similar to Netflix’s growing slate of sports programming such as Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Break Point. The series will take an inside look at everything that happens in the professional football league behind the scenes and the more personal stories of one of the most followed leagues in the world,” A Netflix representative said.

Why Netflix struck a deal with La Liga for a Sports Documentary?

The Spanish Football League has seen some of the world’s most sensational players in the history. Argentine legend Lionel Messi, who is arguably the greatest player of all time also played in La Liga for 20 years. His rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, also played for Real Madrid for 9 seasons, where he played 438 matches, scoring 450 goals. Other football icons like Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho also played in La Liga.

La Liga’s domestic and intercontinental success gained them a huge fan base across the world. La Liga is the football competition with the most followers on Social Media, with over 158 million followers across 17 platforms like Instagram and Twitter. The 2023/24 season will begin around August this year, ending in May 2024. With the post-production taking a few months, the series is expected to release somewhere between September and December 2024.
