The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) have officially released a statement following their decision to disallow Luis Diaz‘s goal against Spurs. Liverpool eventually succumbed to the decision, losing the match 2-1 as Jurgen Klopp sulked at full-time.
PGMOL acknowledged that their failure to intervene and cancel out the ‘human error’ that led to the goal being canceled was a mistake. The incident occurred in the first half of the game when Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead. Or what seemed like it until VAR ‘wrongly’ disallowed it for offside.
The manager voiced his frustrations as the decision changed te outlook of the game. Following Diaz’s goal being ruled offside, Tottenham scored that changed the game’s momentum. The controversy around the disallowed goal added to Liverpool’s misery as they conceded a 90th-minute own goal through Joel Matip.
Jurgen Klopp threw tantrums, calling his team’s performance in “the most unfair circumstances” with unreal decisions. He received support from Gary Neville as well. In response, PGMOL has come forward, accepting that they will thoroughly review the circumstances leading to the error. The incident has increased scrutiny of the surrounding technology that influences the game.
Jamie Carragher voices his frustration on VAR decision for Liverpool against Spurs
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has added his voice to the chorus of criticism aimed at the use of VAR during Liverpool’s contentious clash with Tottenham. The match saw Liverpool reduced to nine men after red cards were shown to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota.
However, Carragher believes that Liverpool should have been ahead earlier in the game when Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside. The controversial decision occurred after a quick VAR review, which did not display the customary offside lines on the screen. Gary Neville, in his commentary, expressed surprise at the decision. He questioned the speed at which it was made and the absence of clear lines on the VAR monitor.
Carragher, taking to Twitter during the match, expressed frustration over the delay in a response from the FA PGMOL. He suggested a ‘f**k up’ had occurred in the decision-making process. Despite the contentious decisions, Liverpool equalized right before halftime through Cody Gakpo. However, they ultimately lost the match 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.
