Newcastle United almost completed a ‘double’ over Paris Saint-Germain. After beating them 4-1 in St. James’ Park, they were on the verge of winning at Parc des Princes too. However, a contentious decision by the VAR gave PSG a penalty, changing the game’s course. Subsequently, this led the club legend, Alan Shearer to take to social media to express his emotions.

In the 95th minute, Ousmane Dembele was in the box and attempted to play the ball towards Kylian Mbappe, but he instead hit Newcastle’s Tino Livramento. The ball hit the side of his chest and deflected onto his hand. When the PSG players appealed, referee Szymon Marciniak let the play continue before VAR interfered.

Despite the situation not following the new rules set up by UEFA, the VAR called it a penalty, which seemed harsh. Kylian Mbappe made no mistakes and scored the equalizer, ensuring they got a point even though many experts felt that they were the 2nd best team throughout. But the Parisians wouldn’t mind it.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United Legend, Alan Shearer, was certainly not happy with the penalty call. He tweeted:

Do me a f*cking favor man. What a load of shi*t. #VAR

With this draw, Newcastle’s chances of qualifying for the Round of 16 have taken a huge hit, with the side now at 3rd. If they had won, they would be 2nd with 8 points, while PSG would be 3rd with 6.

Twitter was quick to remind Alan Shearer of his old posts

On 4th November, Newcastle United beat Arsenal in St. James Park after a highly controversial draw that was discussed for weeks. In the same passage of play the ball was possibly out of play, a Joelinton shove on Gabriel Magalhaes, and a possible off-side, which were all awarded to the Magpies.

Shearer, on seeing the goal, tweeted out:

Well done ref, you're the man.

Following the game even Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta called it a disgrace and added that he was ‘sick to be a part of this’.

Now, as Shearer has ranted about the handball call in the PSG-Newcastle clash, Arsenal fans were quick to hit back at the former striker. They reminded him of his old tweet. Some fans showed sympathy to Newcastle, saying it was an extremely harsh call while others said they followed the rules.

Newcastle will now host AC Milan at home on 14th December in a must-win match. The only way they will make it to the Round of 16 is if they beat AC Milan and PSG drop points against Borussia Dortmund. If PSG lose, the Magpies just need to win. But if PSG draw, Newcastle will need to win by two goals to improve their goal difference.
