The January transfer window just closed, and Premier League clubs spent a staggering £815 million. The English top tier spent more than the combined total of the remaining top 4 leagues. While Chelsea smashed every possible transfer record, spending over £500 million alone. La Liga Corporate Director Javier Gomez criticized the English league after their jaw-dropping transfers. He even claimed the league is “cheating” and is “economically doped”.

“We are aware there is a lot of talk about how La Liga’s economic control means Spanish clubs sign less than Premier League clubs. Let’s explain what’s behind that. What’s the truth? The reality is that at La Liga we want clubs to spend what they can afford and generate themselves, that is to say, their own revenues.” Director Javier Gomez shared a video on Twitter, explaining.

“What’s the issue? Essentially, they are ‘doping’ the club. They are injecting money not generated by the club for it to spend, which puts the viability of the club at risk if the shareholder leaves. In our opinion, that is cheating, because it drags down the rest of the leagues.” Gomez explained.

Premier League club Chelsea went over the top during the January transfer window, signing a record 16 players since the end of last season. Chelsea crossed their £500 million mark with their latest and most expensive transfer of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea alone spent 37 per cent of the total amount spent in the January transfer window.

The Blues, who are currently in the 10th position in the Premier League, stocked up a huge number of players including some potential stars. Mykhailo Mudryk, the star winger from Shakhtar Donetsk, Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid and Benoit Badiashile from Monaco. Chelsea managed to leverage from the current FFP, as they signed most of their players for a long-term contract, longer than the general 5 years. Mudryk and Enzo both signed a lengthy contract of 8.5 years. The current amortization rules allow clubs to distribute the players’ costs over an extended length of their contract.

UEFA will be amending the FFP, restricting the rules for the lengths of their contract after Premier League’s teams splashed a huge amount. Starting next summer, the amortization will be limited to 5 years for player contracts. Chelsea, who has spent the majority of the amount, may also be penalized for their transfer expenses.
