Why Frank de Boer could be the right mentor for the Netherlands in the future despite Euros exit

Why Frank de Boer could be the right mentor for the Netherlands in the future despite Euros exit

The Dutch crashed out of the Euros round of 16 stages after being defeated 2-0 on 27th June by an unpredictable and inspiring Czech Republic side. The Netherlands missed the services of star defender Virgil van Dijk at the backline and Mattijs de Ligt’s foul for which he was sent off also took the momentum away from the Dutch. Despite exiting early this Netherlands outfit has the quality to achieve greatness in the future as they possess some talented youngsters. Frank de Boer made smart changes in the playing eleven depending on the tactical strengths of every player in every game.

The manager has shown confidence in his wards and looking at the way they are shaping up they could be world-beaters in the future if they play to their capabilities. The players looked settled in the 3-5-2 formation that de Boer has opted for. Former players are calling for de Boer’s removal after a disappointing end in the Euros but the manager should be given some time to settle in his new role where he can understand every player’s game and work accordingly.

There were alterations in the set-up which helped in assessing every player’s game. Although there is a gap between experience and talent in this Dutch outfit it can ring alarm bells for any strong team if they play to their capabilities. Frank de Boer and the team management have ensured every department has enough quality and depth that can give assured resistance for the long run.

Although Virgil Van Dijk was unavailable, Denzel Dumfries provided solidity and technical assuredness at the back. Before the Euros the 25-year-old was an unknown figure but has proved his doubters wrong with fine performances. The same goes with Donyell Malen, the 23-year-old forward who plays for PSV Eindhoven. He has worked well in tandem with Memphis Depay at the front and was impressive in the team’s 3-0 win over North Macedonia in the group stage game. Playing against top sides will add more technical authority and tactical fluency in this Dutch outfit and Franck de Boer might be looking for a longer process keeping in mind next year’s World Cup.

Looking at de Boer’s selection policies it looked as if he wants to create a sustainable set-up that might add a combination of possession-based play and pressing game in the team by preparing a set of players who can provide technical adaptability as per situations. The 51-year-old manager was spot on in some areas with his strategic combinations while making substitutions in the ongoing Euros which clearly shows he is eager to create a back-up for every player in different positions.

This Dutch outfit has also shown impressive work ethics under de Boer’s guidance and the manager should try to mould every player as per his strengths. Looking at their game, the players are hungry for success and providing a strong base would be ideal for the players’ as well as the team’s success in the long run. de Boer and the team management have made changes while picking combinations by trying to assess the combination as per the opposition which was quite impressive. One disappointing result can’t be the reason to judge someone’s man-management policies and at a time when the individual is new to his role.

Although the Dutch were unfortunate to not make it to the quarters, at present the team is heading towards the right direction under de Boer. It is a big challenge for de Boer himself as he was brought in place of Dick Advocaat just 9 months before and had a limited amount of time to understand every player’s game. Nevertheless, the manager is trying to create an environment where every player is given the chance to express his concerns. It will be a challenging task for de Boer and the team management and will depend on how they execute their plans and selection strategies for the long run. The players need to be moulded temperamentally so that they can produce their A-game during nervy moments. Irrespective of the result against the Czech Republic, de Boer needs to be given time to work out future modalities given the inexperience in the squad.

The players will need to show collectiveness and consistency to compete against the best. At the moment the team is heading towards a progressive set-up that could define its future but only time will tell whether the team could leave a lasting impression.
