Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli says she is struggling to form an opinion on WADA’s ongoing investigation into Jannik Sinner‘s doping case. The World No. 1 had previously been cleared twice, but WADA announced on September 28 that they would be reopening the investigation.

Sinner is back in the spotlight for negative reasons, as his doping scandal has resurfaced in the tennis world. The issue first became a hot topic in mid-August, just hours after he won the Cincinnati Open title.

The problem with clostebol, being on the list of banned substances, is that since it is considered a substance that the human body does not produce, there is no threshold taken into account. The detected level in Jannik Sinner’s urine during his positive tests in March was 0.00000001. This is an entirely negligible amount. But no matter the quantity, it’s still considered positive, and that’s where the gray area comes into play, which makes it very difficult for me to form an opinion (…). Does all of this warrant a one or two-year suspension?

Sinner avoided suspension from tennis authorities despite testing positive twice for a banned substance. This sparked significant criticism, as other players like Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova were suspended for similar cases.

Sinner faced intense scrutiny leading up to the US Open, with many former and current players criticizing the lack of punishment. However, the Italian set aside the controversy and went on to win his first US Open title, defeating Taylor Fritz in the final in straight sets.

Jannik Sinner qualifies for the China Open quarterfinals

Jannik Sinner has shown remarkable resilience this week at the China Open. On Saturday, he secured his second straight comeback win at the ATP 500 event in Beijing. Sinner fought back to defeat Roman Safiullin 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, ensuring he has reached the quarter-finals in every tournament he’s played in 2024.

After dropping the first set against Nicolas Jarry in the opening round, Sinner found himself in a similar situation against Safiullin, who broke his serve twice to win the first set. However, the top seed responded strongly, completing the match in two hours and 22 minutes on the Capital Group Diamond Court.

Sinner’s power and consistency from the baseline wore down Safiullin as he won seven consecutive games from 2-2 in the second set to take control. The World No.1 converted four of 13 break points during the match, according to Infosys ATP Stats, securing his 57th win of the season, tying with Alexander Zverev for the most victories in 2024.

Sinner will now face Jiri Lehecka in the quarter-finals, who beat Roberto Bautista Agut earlier. With this win, the top seed moves closer to finishing the year as the ATP Year-End No. 1, leading second-placed Zverev by 2,985 points in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin.
