World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is in legal trouble once again after WADA opened an investigation into the ruling of his doping scandal. The Italian seemed to be moving on from his controversial situation before WADA announced yesterday (September 28) that they were investigating his case.
Many former and current players have commented on this development. Sinner himself expressed that he was “surprised” by the news, despite initially being cleared. Now, his agent, Jamie Singer, has also weighed in, stating that the ongoing WADA investigation is “unnecessary.”
Sinner’s doping scandal first came to light in mid-August when he tested positive for a banned substance (clostebol) twice but avoided any suspension from tennis authorities—the 23-year-old faced scrutiny from many former and current tennis players, particularly Nick Kyrgios.
In response, Sinner parted ways with his fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, and physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi. The World No. 1 replaced them with Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio, who previously worked with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Carlos Alcaraz matches Jannik Sinner’s feat at the China Open
Carlos Alcaraz is close to reclaiming the No. 2 spot in the ATP Rankings after a strong win against Tallon Griekspoor at the China Open. The 21-year-old beat the Dutch player 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the ATP 500 event, marking his 200th career win. Alcaraz reached this milestone just four years after debuting in the ATP Tour main draw.
He is only the third player born in the 2000s to achieve 200 victories, joining Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Alcaraz is now within reach of overtaking Alexander Zverev in the rankings. He will move ahead of the German if he wins his next match.
Jannik Sinner remains safe at No. 1 with 10,780 points in the Live Rankings. Zverev, who missed the China Open due to illness, has 6,705 points, while Alcaraz trails him by just 95 points. A victory in his next match will push Alcaraz past Zverev.
Alcaraz will next face Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals. If he wins, his points will increase to 6,710 and if he wins the tournament, his total will rise to 7,010. This comes after a recent dip in form following his loss to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Olympics, but he regained confidence by helping Team Europe win the Laver Cup.
