Max Verstappen won because of Wheatley according to Toto Wolff
In the documentary Hamilton’s contentious defeat to Verstappen was because of the “wrong decisions” from Race director Masi and that he was “turned” by Red Bull’s sporting director Jonathan Wheatley with whom he shared a “Bromance” with. “Jonathan Wheatley has done his job” said Toto Wolff. “He’s turned Michael Masi the race director, not only in Abu Dhabi but before, and probably Max owes him a lot.”
On his relationship with Masi post-race Wolff said, “I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t want to speak to him ever again. His decisions were wrong and I’m sure that he regrets them. The FIA should have seen much earlier that there was a problem. There was a problem with the structure. There was a problem of personalities.”
The controversial ruling by the then Race Director Micheal Masi allowed the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves giving the Dutchman a chance to make the overtake on the Briton with his fresher soft tyres. Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas will alternate between races as the Race Director role. Herbie Blash has been given the designation of ‘permanent senior advisor’ and shall be overseeing the decisions of the Race Director.
