With being one of the teams to show up for the Australian Grand Prix without any upgrades, Mercedes find themselves in a tough situation not only for this weekend but also for the remainder of the season. This surely would have gotten Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. After winning the constructors championship eight times in a row, Mercedes would be eyeing the 9th title but Ferrari and Red Bull would be their hurdles in a season-long race.

In the build up to the weekend, the trackside engineering director for Mercedes said, “We’re finding it hard to generate tire temperature here so that’s the big thing we need to work on overnight. We were clearly more competitive in the first session than in the cooler conditions of the afternoon session, and the data we’re seeing from the car is supporting the fact we’re just not hot enough,”.

George Russel and Lewis Hamilton, both had a few difficulties with the car in all the three practice sessions, which is not a good sign for them just before the qualifying. With the drivers finding it tough to finish in the top ten, Mercedes will have to rethink a lot of decisions and make the required changes.

In an interview, Lewis Hamilton said, “FP2 was a difficult session, we tried a few changes but the car didn’t seem to want to improve. FP1 was better but it’s just a tricky car to get working. It’s frustrating because you’re pushing and pushing, and even when you pull off a good lap, you look at the times and we’re over a second down. We’ve got lots of work to do to close the gap,”

Toto Wolff in full praise of Max Verstappen

The Mercedes Team Principal was in complete praise of the current Formula 1 champion, saying ‘This was not Max’s last title’.

Nobody can deny the fact that Max Verstappen and Red Bull have helped each other in reaching where they currently are. Max Verstappen’s title winning season last year surely has to be one of the most thrilling battles ever seen in the history of Formula 1. Although Toto Wolff and the rest of the world thinks he is great, but at the end of the day he is Mercedes’ rival.

With a title race in the hands of Mercedes, Toto Wolff had a few words to say. “There won’t be a magic fix for the next race weekend, but we’re pushing to steadily bring gains over the upcoming races, to hopefully move us closer to the front of the pack. Until then, we need to maximize each opportunity and make the most of the package we have.”
