When Michael Masi chose to allow Max Verstappen to be right beside Lewis Hamilton for a championship defying 1-lap sprint race, the outcome was a mere formality as the 24-years-old Dutchman was always going to be quick for the seven-time world champion after the initial straight. But with one of the most controversial of ending in the history of sports took place, the 36-years-old Brit has been labelled as lucky.

With both of Mercedes’ appeals being turned down, Abu Dhabi wasn’t the only Grand Prix with a disputed incident and now Honda F1 CEO Masashi Yamamoto has pointed to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as an example of Hamilton apparently getting off lightly.

On that day, the 36-year-old slid into the gravel while running second and hit the barrier, but managed to reverse and continue, and a later red flag then allowed him time to repair his car and recover.

“Lewis made a mistake, went off the track and lost a lot of time,” said Yanamoto as per Mirror. “However, the red flag allowed his car to be repaired and he was able to make up the lost lap time. Lewis has been lucky a few times this season and this was one of them.”

The Japanese company has won six constructors’ titles, six drivers’ championships and over 80 Grands Prix, and are the only Asian team to have won a title in F1. Having said that, now with the build up to 2022 season all set, will Red Bull be able to challenge and perhaps get the better of Mercedes when the latter is seeking for nothing but revenge? Only time will unravel all the answers.
