Toto Wolff Unsure Whether Valtteri Bottas Would Have Benefited From Multi-Year Contract
Toto Wolff and Valtteri Bottas
The end of the current Formula 1 season brings a new grid for the 2022 season. One of the biggest changes on the grid will be Valtteri Bottas’ move to Alfa Romeo, while the young George Russell moves to take the Mercedes seat. Yet, the controversy surrounding Bottas’ treatment at Mercedes have not managed to escape the spotlight.
Bottas earlier mentioned that the single year contract extension brought more pressure to his performance at Mercedes, and it has affected his recent season. But Toto Wolff seems to think quite the opposite. He feels that the Finn has an issue keeping up with seven time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. A poor DNF at the Qatar Grand Prix did not help his case either.
“Toto Wolff Thinks Pressure is Good for Me,” Valtteri Bottas Talks About Mercedes Team Head
Bottas has moved on to a multi year contract to Alfa Romeo, and will be joined by Alex Albon in 2022. Valtteri said that, “Toto thinks pressure is good for me.” Yet Bottas seems to think the opposite. According to planetf1, Bottas said, “I agree, pressure for a certain length of time is good and can get more out of you, but if you have pressure contractually for nine years of your Formula 1 career, year by year, it starts to eat you from inside, you know?”
Wolff swiftly responded to Bottas’ comments saying that it was him who faced pressure from Hamilton instead. “Would a multi-year contract have been better? With hindsight, you can always have a different opinion. I still think he’s a great guy and a fast driver. But I also think spending years with Lewis can put a lot of pressure on him.”
