As the US Grand Prix 2021 finally took place this year, after a year of absence due to the hiatus caused by Covid-19. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes were deemed as the favorite to win the race at COTA, given their dominance in the previous seasons. Yet Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were determined to put forward Red Bull’s claim ever since the start of Day 2. 

However, as during the US Grand Prix Qualifying session, Verstappen registered the pole position to his name, many thought that the Dutchman could pull off an upset against Hamilton, which might have broken the mental strength of the reigning champion and his team. Knowing that Perez was right behind the seven-time world champion since the start.

With Red Bull’s Max Verstappen being ahead of Lewis Hamilton for majority of the race, it seemed like Mercedes pace always gave them an upper hand while running on the straights. Safe to say, the seven-time world champion patiently waited for his chance to overtake his rival. Mercedes made sure that Hamilton has been equipped with fresh tyres after Verstappen so that he could use his pace on the corners as well make the most of the DRS. In addition, the gap between Hamilton taking on Verstappen one-on-one was less than 2 seconds.

The gamble was taken by Mercedes when they pitted Hamilton early in order to give him an added advantage against Verstappen during the latter stages. However with the surprise and drama of Mick Schumacher keeping Verstappen behind him, he was able to fetch DRS and maintain his cool to break Lewis Hamilton’s monopoly in the States and emerge victorious. With this victory at US Grand Prix, Verstappen has extended his lead in double digits. Red Bull completed their return in the Constructor’s Championship as well, as Perez finished third.
