‘He’s done a great job!’ Michael Masi gains Sebastian Vettel’s support over Abu Dhabi verdict

Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel is a German Racing who is competing in Formula One for Aston Martin, alongside Lance Stroll. Vettel has won four World Championship titles in total having previously driven for BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red bull and Ferrari. He is also the youngest World Champion in the history of f1.

In an interview, the 34-year-old German driver sided with Michael Masi who is serving as the FIA’s Formula One race director since March 2019 towards his decision regarding the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix controversy.

Michael Masi has been in the lime light way to often due to his controversial safety car decision which cost Lewis Hamilton his eight World Championship title and crowned Max Verstappen his maiden World Championship win. While there have been plenty of criticism directed towards Michal Masi in the last few months since the 2021 season ended, Sebastian Vettel seems to think otherwise.

Sebastian Vettel applauded Michael Masi for “doing a great job” in his role as a race director. “I think it’s just been a pity. There are two interests clashing, one is the sport and the other one is the show. For me, obviously, I don’t care so much about the show because [I’m] involved in and look at it as a sport and from a competitive point of view,” added Vettel while talking about the Drive to Survive show in Netflix and about the ongoing furore surrounding the 2021 title decider.

Sebastian Vettel defends Michael Masi

When asked about his views on Michael Masi, Vettel complimented Michael regarding his role played in overseeing the logistics of a Formula One racing weekend and acknowledging his hardship, he said,

“It’s not the easiest sometimes to be in the shoes of the referee or Michael’s shoes, but I think he’s done a great job. I don’t know what his future is but I hope he sticks around because I think he, overall, did a very, very good job,” said Vettel.

I don’t know what his future is but I hope he sticks around because I think he, overall, did a very, very good job. There’s a lot of controversy for the last race, but there shouldn’t be. If you look at the bigger picture, he’s done very well,” he added.

Sebastian Vettel’s views on the F1 rulebook

Even though Sebastian Vettel fully supports Michael Masi’s decision, he does believe and wants the rulebook to be even clearer in order to ensure a situation like the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix does not occur.

Vettel then proceeds to comment on the sport saying, “I think the main thing is that we focus on the sport and not so much on the show, last year, it was always going to be a great final or great last race, because there was one winner and one loser. Ideally, you have two winners, but that’s not how the sport is designed or any sport is designed, so it wasn’t gonna work.”

“Obviously, I was in the race and wondering why we [weren’t] earlier in order to get the race started again, but I guess there’s a protocol and rules.”

While the controversy still stirs up about Hamilton’s future after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel was unsure about whether Lewis would walk out or not.

“I don’t know honestly whether Lewis was considering to stop or not,” Vettel said.

“I think he’s competitive and I don’t know… has he confirmed that he’s going to race? I don’t know what the latest is. Ask him!,” said Vettel when asked about Lewis Hamilton.
