Max Verstappen takes a dig at ‘unfair’ FIA decisions and reveals his changed opinion on Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes
Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton enter the Saudi Arabian GP level on points, as the duo brace for a championship decider in Abu Dhabi. Verstappen felt undone by the FIA last weekend in Jeddah, as he was handed two different penalties for two separate incidents involving Lewis Hamilton.
Speaking ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP 2021, Max Verstappen was asked to touch upon his opinion towards Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, and whether, it has changed this season.
“Yes, very much, and not in a positive way. Well, clearly, it feels that something is not right. For me, I don’t experience bullying, but I think what is going on is not correct,” said Max, as quoted by RacingNews365.
Max Verstappen also stated that the only thing on his mind this weekend is to win the Abu Dhabi GP and the championship. Verstappen hopes that the Abu Dhabi GP could be a fair race, as he thinks that the decisions by FIA off-late have been quite biased.
“From my side, I just tried to do the best I can, and I’ll try to win this weekend. At the end of the day, that’s how you win a championship. The only thing I ask for is that it’s fair for everyone and, clearly, that’s not the case at the moment,” he said.
“I don’t feel like I was wrong and, clearly, it is not wrong for others, so why should I then change when others are allowed to race like that? I think everyone should be allowed to race like that,” Verstappen added.
New experience, but the same person during the 2021 season
Max Verstappen reveals that despite getting the much-needed experience this season, he has remained the same person in 2021. The Dutchman revealed that he felt ready to compete for the championship since a long time, and he just needed a faster car to do so.
“I think I’m the same person. Again, it’s another season almost done where you gain experience, but I felt ready for it already for a long time,” he continued.
“And, to be honest, when I joined Formula 1 in 2015, if I had been given a championship-winning car, I’m pretty certain that I would have fought for that championship anyway, because a really good car makes your life so much easier,” Verstappen added.
Max Verstappen stated that starting from the front of the grid is relatively easier, as one does not have to make as many overtakes as starting from the back.
“The risk of being involved in a mid-pack starts is less, you don’t overtake as much. Realistically, most of the time, you only need to fight your teammate. So the better car you have, the fewer issues you have,” he added.
“Of course, from my first year to now, I definitely gained a lot more experience, how to approach a weekend a lot easier, you understand car setups a lot better… but I’m the same person,” the Dutchman continued.
