‘I have nothing to prove,’ Max Verstappen comes back at Lewis Hamilton

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are engaged in the title battle upfront this season with the latter leading by 14 points after four races. This is the first time that Hamilton is pushed to his absolute limit since 2016 when his teammate Nico Rosberg was the driver’s champion.

A few days back, Hamilton acknowledged Verstappen’s brilliant driving this season and said that may have a lot to prove this year in Formula 1. But now, ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen has hit back at Hamilton. He said: “I have nothing to prove.”

This week in Monte Carlo, the Dutch driver finished P3 and P4 in the first two practice sessions on Thursday whereas Hamilton has finished P5 and P3 respectively.

In the build-up to the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren boss Zak Brown said that Verstappen and Hamilton came close to crashing in Spain and could collide soon in their battle for a position. Verstappen spoke about the same too.

“Avoiding contact, I think it goes both ways, so we have done well, that’s true. But we raced hard, we avoided the contact, both sides, let’s hope we can keep doing that and keep being on track and race hard against each other,” Verstappen said.

“We never try to crash, do we? It’s just to make a few interesting headlines like that.”

“I guess it will have a bit more viewers when you say it’s a matter of time, and then instead of saying we had some great races so far. People will of course click that more,” he concluded.

Verstappen has a good chance to edge close to Hamilton this Sunday and his one-lap pace on Saturday will hugely decide the outcome of the race.
