“Sergio Perez often disappears,” Jean Alesi critical of Red Bull driver’s performance in Bahrain

The Bahrain Grand Prix did not end well for Red Bull. With Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez forcefully retired their cars due to fuel pump problems. Both appeared to be on course for the podium at the time was a huge disappointment for the team and fans around the world.

The reliability issue that struck late in the Grand Prix for both the drivers helped Ferrari to easily get to the podium with 1-2 for Ferrari. Throughout the race, we could see Max Verstappen swapping the lead with Charles Leclerc a couple of times with an opening third of the race before getting booked at second place.

Whereas Sergio Perez was seen running a solid fourth place without really threatening those ahead of him throughout the race. Jean Alesi, in his column, wrote: “Sainz is always calm and with the consistency he brought home a beautiful second place, keeping Perez behind without giving a single chance to overtake.”

The 57-year-old Frenchman still holds the Scuderia in high regard and relished their 1-2 finish in Bahrain, the first race of the season, with Charles Leclerc leading Carlos Sainz home. While writing about the Grand Prix he also said, “Perez often disappears. It’s a fact.” As he did not make any major moves or overtakes that night.

Jean Alesi’s take on the Mercedes and Ferrari duo

Alesi also talked about the other dynamic duos lined up on the grid and the impact of their relationship in the championship. “An explosive pair,” he said while talking about George Russell and Lewis Hamilton who he also fears could be detrimental for the team dynamic as Hamilton has to show he remains the strongest and undefeated on the gird while Russell will want to prove to be the new kid beating a super champion.

However, the man who has competed in 201 Grands Prix and has 32 podium finishes believes the Ferrari partnership is in the right place – and that the Italian giants will win again in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Alesi thinks the driver duo of Sainz and Leclerc is best due to the difference in their character.

Charles Leclerc according to Alesi is, “gritty, he’s instinctive. His race was flawless, he passed Verstappen three times and a strong car isn’t enough there – you need a driving monster.” Whereas Carlos Sainz is “a stubborn chaser. He struggled to keep up with the pace of the leaders but he managed to keep them in his sights and I know what that means to race like that.”

Jean Alesi is expecting a repeat of Bahrain where he witnessed every Ferrari fan happy with immense joy and tears as this really is a good team.
