The new Mercedes W13 was launched on 18 February, Friday in presence of Toto Wolff, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The three were interviewed before the car was revealed to the spectators on Friday and everyone had interesting insights to share for the same.

Recently, the new Mercedes driver, George Russell was seen addressing the changes made by the FIA due to the emergence of problems in the old rules in the book and how it sparked one of the most controversial wins in the history of F1 in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The controversial move made by Michael Masi cost him his role as a race director in F1 and is replaced by Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, who will be changing positions alongside a new senior advisor, chaired by Herbie Blash.

In order to avoid controversies and instill fair play, FIA has introduced a new VAR-style virtual race control center which will help in assisting in races henceforth.

George Russell’s insights on the GDPA:

In an interview. Russell was asked about his inputs on the new GDPA system and he replied saying, “Yeah, as the GPDA we did speak to the FIA and they were incredibly proactive straight away after Abu Dhabi to find better solutions.”

“The VAR solution is great and it makes total sense to have further assistance, people analysing live and more input to get a quicker view and decision to be made,” he said.

“Time’s progressed, things move on. The way that drivers are exploiting the rulebook is understandable and the FIA need to do more to compensate for that because every team, every driver is always going to look for a way to get the upper hand,” he added

“I think it will take some time to really refine but I do think it’s a step in the right direction. But it’s never enough. It’s always going to need more. With the VAR, the more things we do virtually can only be beneficial.”
