George Russell or Max Verstappen? Toto Wolff picks his third choice driver at Mercedes

Max Verstappen

There have been several rumors regarding Mercedes’ lineup for the 2022 season. Lewis Hamilton signed just a one year contract extension, which raised doubts over his future at the German team. On the other hand, the pressure keeps growing on the Finnish driver, Valtteri Bottas to deliver this season.

George Russell is considered as the favorite to claim a Mercedes seat in the future. The young Briton is the reserve driver for Silver Arrows, and is in the final year of his three year Williams contract.

There have been talks of Max Verstappen joining Mercedes in the near future, if he fails to win the championship. Verstappen is in his sixth season in Formula One, and would love to win the championship at some point in the near future. However, Lewis Hamilton has dominated the circuit since the past four seasons, and has claimed seven F1 titles.

All Formula One team bosses were asked about the driver in the current grid, whom they wanted to add in their team. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal picked George Russell, which gives a clear indication of Wolff’s plan for the future.

With Wolff setting his priorities straight, we can expect the young Briton to claim a Mercedes seat next season, at the expense of Valtteri Bottas, who may be on his way out.

McLaren CEO, Zak Brown had a rather straightforward answer and picked Max Verstappen as his choice to join the team. “He’s (Verstappen) aggressive – I used to race against his dad, and his dad was very good,” said Brown.

As far as the current F1 season is concerned, Max Verstappen leads the championship by just four points after claiming the Monaco GP victory. Lewis Hamilton is placed second, with 101 points from his five races.
