WATCH: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton share a friendly moment at Bahrain GP after intensely-lived 2021 season
The 2022 season started with a banger with one of the most unexpected podiums and first points scorers on the grid. The one thing which remained constant even on this day was Lewis Hamilton. Starting P5, Lewis Hamilton was able to secure the third position on the podium alongside Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz who secured 1-2 for Ferrari in the Bahrain GP with a dramatic start for the season.
Even though the team struggled with the pace at the start, Lewis Hamilton continued his streak of scoring a podium in every season he has raced in. While he continues to break records, the rival team, Red Bull certainly had an unexpected and hurtful end. The issue arose when both the drivers had to retire their cars due to the fuel pump failure. Normally, the fuel travels via a lift pump to a collector, then to a primer pump that steps the pressure up, and then from the tank it goes into a higher pump which feeds the V6.
Hence in simpler terms, something in the RB18’s fuel system had failed and it was not able to pick up the last few liters left in there which were essentially going to help the cars reach the checkered flag.
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen share a moment of respect at Bahrain GP
Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez had a wonderful start and were one of the fastest cars on the grid in the Bahrain GP. While the two teammates put forth a tough competition against Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, with just two more laps remaining for the checkered flag, the teammates had a stroke of hard luck and were not able to finish the first race of 2022 due to a fuel pump failure in their RB18s.
Even so, Red Bull’s Twitter handle took a lot of fans by surprise when they posted a short clip showing Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen shaking hands with the caption “Respect”, which was also reposted by the official Mercedes Twitter account. Many were happy to see the two drivers promoting the sportsman spirit after a long and controversial fight last year.
The following step did receive a lot of love from the supporters and fans of both the teams while we are hoping to see this message as a step towards an end to the bitter rivalry between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton and they move along with a friendly battle on screen.
