On Tuesday, the golfing world was left stunned when PGA tour Commissioner Jay Monahan dropped a bombshell regarding the unexpected merge with LIV Golf. Up to this point, the two tours had shared bitter animosity with each other. The Saudi-funded tour was often criticized and shamed for its actions. Ever since the news broke out, several players have given their opinions related to this matter. However, Bryson DeChambeau‘s words have not gone well down with the community.
While speaking to CNN on this matter, DeChambeau was asked about his initial reactions to the matter. The golfer, who is a part of the LIV league, claimed that the whole merger thing would be good for the future of the sport. He was then asked about the comments on the 9/11 families. The league which receives its money from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), has been a part of numerous debates regarding the funding.
The golfer started off by saying that the damage done was absolutely horrible and cannot be repaid. He later added that it had been more than 20 years since the incident and it is perhaps a good time to start working together. “I don’t know exactly what they’re feeling, I can’t even know what they feel,” he said while adding that he hopes nothing like this ever happens again.
After the announcement was made official, the 9/11 Families United was quick to lash out at Monahan. Terry Strada, the chairperson of this group, blasted the commissioner for agreeing to a partnership with the Saudi-backed league. The Middle East country has been caught up in long disputes in their involvement with the attacks. 15 of the 19 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. The government has time and again declined any involvement in this major attack.
Bryson DeChambeau admits there was risk in joining LIV Golf
The statement given by Bryson DeChambeau regarding the 9/11 families has been making rounds on the internet. Fans have been left unimpressed by his choice of words and have criticized the golfer. He is also facing backlash for “feeling bad” for PGA players who stayed behind and decided not to jump ships.
DeChambeau in the interview claimed that it was certainly a “risk” joining the LIV. “The players that did go over, we did take a risk, and there was a reason for taking that risk relative to the capital that had to be paid out for that to occur,” DeChambeau said. He added that the PGA Tour players were informed about one thing and something else happened, while for the LIV, whatever they were told came true.
What will happen next in golf is unclear. This development which has come out of the blue has raised some unsolved puzzles. The officials have not revealed any name to this new partnership. As per reports, the changes are expected to roll out once the current schedule of the tours comes to an end.
