“We’re definitely good enough players”- Cameron Smith pleads his case as the LIV vs PGA tussle continues
Cameron Smith
Even in the offseason, Cameron Smith is hitting the headline on a daily basis. One might say that it definitely is a side-effect of his affiliation with the controversy-ridden LIV Golf Circuit. Cameron Smith is the golden oy for LIV Golf as his $100 million signing opened the floodgates for LIV Golf as more younger players were willing to join the new golf circuit.
LIV Golf is funded by Saudi Arabia’s PIF and has been riddled with accusations and lawsuits ever since its inception into the golfing world. LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have battled it out all over the summer for different reasons altogether. LIV has been accused of poaching players several times right under the PGA’s nose.
Although this time it seems different as Cameron Smith tries to put out the fire between the two embattled golf circuits to play out their differences and move forward in their respective domains. He makes his case to both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour requesting them to “rise above politics and let us play”. Well, Cameron, it’s definitely not this simple with multiple angles at play.
Looks like Cameron Smith didn’t think it through when he joined LIV Golf
The Australian was back home after three years to play in his first tournament back home where he chose to speak his mind and express his concerns about the destiny of LIV players regarding the majors next year. Cameron Smith is all set to defend The Open title next year but the fate of LIV players in The Masters, USPGA Championship, and US Open hangs in balance.
“I think the majors really have to stand above all the politics” – said Smith to The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. “If they really want the best product and the best players playing against each other in the world, they have to let us play. There’s no reason other than playing another tour that should suggest we shouldn’t play”. TBH, Smith should have thought about all this drama before accepting LIV’s mammoth signing fee.
“We’re definitely good enough players. We should have those spots” – stated the World No. 3 who will definitely see his ranking go down the drain as LIV’s 54-hole no-cut events aren’t awarded the OWGR points at the moment. Looks like the tussle between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour will continue into next season.
