“Number was out before I became CEO” – Greg Norman rolls back $800M LIV Golf offer talk with Tiger Woods

Greg Norman and Tiger Woods

LIV Golf chief Greg Norman has reckoned that Tiger Woods was never offered the reported whopping $A1 billion sign-on fee to join the Saudi-backed tournament. He rowed back his own claim that the 15-time major winner Woods was offered a contract in the region of $800 million.

Tiger, who is still the biggest figure in golf despite his fitness issues, was last year courted by the rebel league with an astronomical cash offer. Owing to such media claims, a figure between $700 and $800 million ($A997m to $A1.1bn) was thought to have been offered to the veteran golfer based on Norman’s comments.

That number was out there before I became CEO,” Norman said of Woods, as quoted by foxsports.com.au. “That number has been out there, yes. Tiger is a needle mover. So, of course, you got to look at the best of the best.

“Never offered that cash value to Tiger Woods”

The 46-year-old Woods was offered a much smaller sign-on fee but the remainder of LIV’s $A1 billion pitch was made up of potential future earnings through ownership of one of its 12 franchises.

Norman added: “To be honest, we don’t comment on any past or current offers to any players. I just want to make sure for clarification here that the numbers that were thrown out were inclusive of future franchise value.

“And so if you take a look at this number that’s being thrown out there … the generational wealth that this franchise opportunity has for the individual players is incredible.

“That’s how it is. It’s not the cash value. We never offered that cash value to Tiger Woods. That’s the reality of it.”
