The world ranking point debate in golf is taking new twists and turns as each day passes by. The latest is the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) denying the LIV golfers ranking points in the recently concluded Bangkok Championship and the upcoming Jeddah event.
Now, the Saudi-backed series is being forced to look at other options after their partnership with the MENA Tour (the Middle East and Africa) fell through.
It has been reported that the rebel league is in advanced talks to start offering cuts in their events. The Saudi Arabia event is said to be the first in a series of changes the LIV Golf has been forced to make to comply with the Official World Golf Ranking’s requirements.
LIV Golf intended to change the format from 54 to 72 holes
The grapevine says the rebel series plans to change its format from 54 to 72 holes. Rumours grew when the league announced that they intend to expand.
Golf reporter Hugo Costa, as part of its upcoming event in Jeddah, LIV welcomes a cut element. It is reported that the OWGR system has trouble gaining traction with players. Since the third event of the inaugural Rebel League season at Bedminster in July, players have discussed rolling back the event to 72 holes. It is reported that the Saudi-backed series has given some thought to extending the event and has agreed to do so.
LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman has been at loggerheads with the PGA Tour and OWGR for a while now. Earlier this week the former Tour champion stated that people just don’t want LIV to grow.
“There are 22 tours that have world ranking points and there’s only one that’s equal to or superior to what LIV is. Only one.
“So, it doesn’t make sense from a major’s perspective. It doesn’t make sense from a broadcaster’s perspective. You’re paying and investing for your strength of the field and degrading the strength of the field and not allowing LIV players to get OWGR points is not doing the game of golf any good.
“Rise above it all, it’s good for the players, it’s good for the game of golf, it’s good for production, it’s good for corporations, it’s good for OEMs, it’s good for fans, it’s good for everybody.“
