On the first day of August, the PGA Tour announced that one of the greatest players, Tiger Woods, will be joining them. Woods will now be a part of the policy tour board as the sixth member. As the golfing world continues to digest this new information, Woods’ long-time rival, Phil Mickelson has stated this is a great thing to see.
The 53-year-old veteran known as “The Lefty”, has been highly vocal on the golfing subject. He has been spotted on numerous occasions, engaging with others on all kinds of topics. He has now called this appointment of Woods “awesome news.”
Mickelson has been shy about sharing this thought. He has timelessly defended the critics against the LIV Golf. Recently he dropped a huge claim that none of the current LIV players want to return and play for the PGA Tour. He said while replying to a user who suggested that the golf defectors will be punished depending on their actions.
Now Mickelson has come into support of Woods. In a reply to a post, the six-time major champion claimed it “great thing to see“. “Players having equal representation on the board on the board. Tiger getting more involved, and accountability across the board. Awesome news,” he said.
Is the appointment of Tiger Woods as sixth policy board member actually an awesome news for golf?
When the merger was announced in June, everyone involved with golf was hit with a lightning bolt. Many top players immediately expressed their displeasure to the board. Several claimed that their “trust” in Commissioner Jay Monahan was lost. However, the LIV Golf players had a completely opposite reaction and were happy with the development.
The thing which concerned the fans most was the silence of Tiger Woods. The legendary golfer decided to stay silent. He though had previously taken digs at Phil Mickelson and LIV Golf. Woods also made it clear that the two tours can only exist, if the CEO of LIV, Greg Norman was removed. So, is this announcement of Woods actually “awesome news“?
The first thing that comes into the mind of many is the future of LIV Golf. As per various reports, their future is in danger if the deal does go through. While having a figure like Woods, backstage does bring confidence to other players, he could very well be the reason for the destruction of LIV. Woods though would be trusted to act as a professional and keep his personal feelings aside for the betterment of golf.
