Rory Mcllroy snubs on a major PGA Tour event invite at the start of 2023
Rory Mcllroy
Rory Mcllroy will miss the start of 2023’s major golfing event, the Sentry Tournament of Champions, at Kapalua, Hawaii. The reigning FedEx Cup Champion qualified for the tournament after winning the 2022 RBC Canadian Open. The last time he appeared in this tournament, he tied for fourth in 2019.
The PGA Tour has several elevated events, which are tournaments with higher prize purses. These events are a new way for PGA Tour to ensure increased prize money payouts for the tournaments. Here, the players finishing in the top 20 of the 2022 Player Impact Program (PIP) are eligible to participate in the elevated events. This year, there have been 39 names listed for entry to the Sentry Tournament as of 5.02 PM on Friday.
Rory Mcllroy chose to skip the Sentry Tournament of Champions
Rory Mcllroy is the current World No. 1 and a three-time winner of the last season. However, it is surprising that one of the ‘Big 3’s from the world of golf will not be present for this tournament. He is also scheduled to play in the DP World Tour in Dubai, which might occur sometime around late January. Hence, it can be assumed that Mcllroy is likely considering limiting his choices at the start of the year.
He is one of many top players not participating in the TOC. Australian golfer and World No. 3 Shane Lowry will also not play in this tournament. He will be out because he is set to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf this September. He was the reigning champion of the TOC from last year, Player Championship, and Open Championship at St. Andrews. However, now he will be banned from the PGA Tour and might not even compete against the world’s stars till April’s Masters.
One of the major highlights of the TOC will be the return of Will Zalatoris after a maiden victory in the FedEx Cup’s St. Jude Classic. He will be coming back from his injury from the BMW Championship in August 2022.
Currently, the 2023 TOC consists of the following players:
- Hideki Matsuyama
