For everyone playing and watching golf in the past few decades, Tiger Woods is one of the game’s living legends. The 13 Majors winner was the top-ranked golfer from August 1999 to September 2004. He continued this stint for another five years, from June 2005 to October 2010. The World Golf Hall of Fame inductee was trusted by some of his closest people, and his father had the most faith in him.

Earl Woods was a US Army officer and a Vietnam War veteran. Since he had access to golf courts, he would ensure Tiger knew how to swing the golf club from a very young age. He had even mentioned how Tiger would defeat his father in golf aged 11 and break 70 on a regulation golf course aged 12.

By age 15, Woods was the youngest US Junior Amateur Champion. He had already won six Junior World Championships, including four consecutive wins from 1988 to 1991. In the above video by Tran World Sport, Tiger shows confidence in his abilities as a 14-year-old as his father trusts him to be one of the greatest of the sport.

In an exclusive interview with Tiger Woods, Trans World Sport was able to gain footage of some exclusive clips of the golf legend in the early phase of his career. Tiger Woods, then 14, showed clear signs of ambition and confidence that was required for a legend. He believed that he could be the best in this sport, perhaps even putting a better aim than golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

As a teenager, he was firm with his skills and even claimed to be bigger than Jack Nicklaus. He said,  “it might be even bigger than Jack Nicklaus. I might be even bigger than him to the blacks.” He even compared himself to Michael Jordan, saying, “I maybe it so like a Michael Jordan basketball, yes.” Surely, he did become one of the sport’s legends, perhaps the biggest name in the current times.

Tiger’s father, Earl Woods, also showed a similar faith in his son and said,  The world is ready; it is absolutely ready for a non-white golfer to be successful; the next booming area in the world for golf is Asia Tiger.”  Tiger did go on to conquer the world of golf, as Earl had rightly predicted.

Looking back to Tiger Woods’ success, Earl Woods had once said to Rolling Stones, “Please forgive me, but sometimes I get very emotional when I talk about my son. My heart fills with so much joy that this young man is going to help so many people. He will transcend this game and bring to the world a humanitarianism that has never been known before.”

If Earl were alive today, he would be fondly thumping his chest to see his son enjoying the highest success of the sport.
