“The battle in on”: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy launch new PGA ‘stadium’ golf competitions in retaliation to LIV Golf Series

The LIV Golf Series vs the PGA Tour battle will not be ending anytime soon. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, the biggest advocates for the PGA Tour, have now decided to help the tour launch a new competition. It is reported to be a series of one day events in stadium environments for the biggest golf stars of all time.

The event will start and be in tandem with the PGA Tour in 2024, with a schedule spanning January to March and ending with a finale at a later date. It is still not clear what exactly this competition entails, but it is expected that Jay Monahan will release more news about it at the Tour Championship in the upcoming months.

Some sources suggest that it will be technologically advanced and held in front of a live audience. NBC Sports is reported to be in talks with the Tour for media rights of the competition. This stadium style competition was decided at a recent meeting of the top 20 players of the PGA Tour who had met to talk about the future of professional golf. This was suggested as a way for players to build equity in the enterprise, allowing for private funding in addition to corporate funding and sponsors.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have been working on this project for two years now

Woods and McIlroy began working on this project over two years ago, as a collaboration that went on to strengthen their friendship even further. That ultimately motivated the two to rally for the PGA Tour, as the LIV Series came to the scene and threatened to take over the golf world.

Woods and McIlroy arranged an informal meeting of players to discuss countering LIV Golf during last month’s J.P. McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor in Ireland. At the follow up meeting last week, a more detailed purview of the situation was provided to the players. Some of those proposals — including schedule changes that would ensure top players compete against each other more often — are now in Monahan’s focus. However, this battle between the LIV Series and PGA Tour will not be over anytime soon.
