Twitter quick to mock ‘obsolete golf rankings’ over LIV Golf controversy ahead of 2023 WM Phoenix Open

WM Phoenix Open 2023

The LIV Golf series has not failed to cause its fair share of controversy since its inception. It has been an uphill battle for the Saudi backed series ever since. They have been shunned by the PGA Tour, the DP World tour and many others. The backlash by other golfers has been high, especially towards those who have joined the LIV Series.

The likes of Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and even Cameron Smith have joined the LIV train. It has given the PGA Tour a tough fight ever since. An anti-trust lawsuit against the PGA Tour and now a court hearing against the DP World Tour means that the LIV Golf Series is not in the best light.

Adding to this, the LIV Golfers have stopped receiving World Golf Ranking points, a decision which has taken the golfing world by storm. Many have argued that it has made the world rankings obsolete, and that it is not a fair comparison anymore. The recent WM Phoenix Open is said to have the Top 23 players in the world in attendance.

However, Twitter fans are not impressed with this statistics, and everyone is acknowledging the fact that the rankings have become rather obsolete. This has reduced the impressiveness of the top field, and rightly so.

Fans are tired of pretending that the PGA has the top 23 golfers in the world, especially when the likes of Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and others are a part of LIV Golf. The golf rankings have been called a big sham, which might as well be true.

It is a serious matter considering that Cameron Smith was once world number 1, and on track to have some great meets. If the situation was different the golfer might still be at the top of the table, which isn’t the case anymore.

What do you think of the recent omission of LIV Golf players from the rankings? Is the Top golfer pool still intact, or can the PGA Players prove themselves to be the best of the best?
