“Oh, Shut Up! Will you?” When the outspoken Phil Mickelson was forced to say SORRY!

Phil Mickelson is someone who never fades away from golfing limelight. The 52-year-old can still challenge some of the best names in golf on a regular basis and has been a contender to win major tournaments for decades.

However, it is not always his golfing skills that have brought Mickelson media attention. The leftie is also known to give strong opinions from time-to-time. Once when the leftie criticized the sum of Federal tax system, he was even forced to apologize.

Golfers, especially those competing in the PGA and now of course LIV, take home a huge prize cheque, sometimes in excess of millions of dollars, whenever they win a tournament. Mickelson said he was being made to pay at least 62 to 63 percent of that income in taxes but considering how much that chunk is and other endorsement benefits for pro sportsmen, the golfer’s statements created a furor at that time.

It all started in 2013 when California raised tax slabs by 7.9%. “If you add up all the federal and you look at the disability and the unemployment and the Social Security and the state, my tax rate’s 62, 63 percent,” Mickelson then told the press

“There are going to be some drastic changes for me because I happen to be in that zone that has been targeted both federally and by the state, and it doesn’t work for me right now,” he added.

Later, when the public expressed wild criticism, Mickelson had to apologize despite well being in line with his democratic right of speech. Despite the high taxes, Mickelson’s net worth is still said to be in excess of $300 million, a figure that is only expected to increase after his recent $200 million deal with LIV golf.

Along with a 54-hole format and no cuts, LIV golf’s newest addition seems like a much needed change — they have allowed shorts on the course. A welcome decision, it has been accepted by several golfers, whether they are against or for the LIV tour. Recently, the world saw it translate as the golfers started wearing shorts on course — especially Phil Mickelson, and the reactions were worth it.

“There’s no question LIV is disruptive… We’ve made some major disruption to the sport of golf, and have created some really unique opportunities for players and fans. And we’re just getting started,” said Mickelson about the new rules, and the shape that LIV is taking as a series.

The LIV Series has introduced new rules in golf — as they want to change the way golf is seen. The series has introduced a team style play of golf, where teams along with individuals play on tournament weekends.

The Saudi-backed series has not yet received the warmest welcome from fans and pros alike, as the large amounts of money being offered to players is seen with suspicion.
