Nothing is going right for Brandon Aiyuk at the moment. On the one hand, he’s going through a rough patch—not recording enough numbers during games. And on the other, he routinely gets into trouble with head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Friday’s practice at the San Francisco 49ers facility was no different. Teammates and reporters watched from afar as Shanahan and Aiyuk exchanged unpleasant words in the middle right before the training.
49ers writer Grant Cohn posted a clip on X (previously Twitter) documenting the incident. After Shanahan left, Aiyuk, the all-pro wide receiver strangely started stripping down his shorts and karate-kicked them away, throwing a tantrum. Fortunately, there was another one underneath.

It was confusing until Cohn revealed the reason for Brandon Aiyuk’s actions. Apparently, Shanahan told his receiver to take his shorts off because it was against the dress code for training. He was the only one wearing red practice shorts, while other athletes showed up in black. The practice went on as scheduled. Shanahan later confirmed the speculations during the presser.

Brandon Aiyuk revealed the reason for his slow start to the 2024 season
Following the 49ers run to the Super Bowl, they decided to extend Aiyuk’s contract. Although the talks dragged on until the first day of the season, they still agreed to a deal of $30 million a year for multiple years.
However, it has been anything but smooth for the 26-year-old wideout. In three regular-season games since the extension, he only has 11 receptions for 119 yards and zero touchdowns. While George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, and Deebo Samuel were sidelined through injuries against the Rams in week 3, it was Jauan Jennings and not Aiyuk who kept the 49ers in the game.
Later, when the reporters asked BA about his slow start to the season, he presented an interesting hypothesis.
It certainly gave Jennings the freedom to have a career game with 3 touchdowns and more than 100 yards in LA. Quarterback Brock Purdy disclosed they will target the Arizona graduate more in the coming weeks.
The 49ers currently sit on 1-2 and will play the New England Patriots on Monday night prime time. Aiyuk needs to start producing the numbers quickly, or he will find himself in the same category as Travis Kelce.
