“I felt we lacked some consistency,” Sergio Perez looks back at another season where he failed to grab F1’s highest honour

2022 was an incredible season for Sergio Perez. Having won the most coveted Monaco Grand Prix and the Singapore Grand Prix, it was clear that he finally had a car that matched his talent. The Mexican also managed to surprise the crowd when he grabbed his first pole position during the Saudi Arabian race in Jeddah. All this proves that the driver has what it takes to win the championship.

However one slight issue that the Mexican has been facing is the lack of consistency in his results. One race he is absolutely dominating and defending like a champion whilst not being up to the mark in another race. During the first half of the 2022 F1 season, Red Bull hot shot Sergio Perez managed to stay as close as possible to Max Verstappen in the season’s championship standings.

However, during the second half of the season, it seemed like Checo had lost his mojo and wasn’t able to perform to the level that he previously did. Some say that the car was easier to drive for Perez at the start of the season but later on, the upgrades led to Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen getting the better of him and absolutely dominate him in team standings.

The Mexican driver went on talk about their season whilst in a conversation with Red Bull. Whilst he was not able to secure P2 in the driver’s championship, he is relatively pleased with his charge and happy with the team’s results: “I would say overall it was a good season. If I look at the season as a whole, I felt we lacked some consistency to compete in the title race. But overall, the team did a decent job.”

Having won the driver’s championship with Max Verstappen and the Constructor’s championship with the help of both the drivers, Red Bull had gone onto win big in 2022 grabbing the highest honours. Sergio Perez on the other hand will be training and looking to grab the driver’s title out of his teammate’s clutches next year. It will be interesting to see whether Perez can be consistent enough to win the title.
