Novak Djokovic’s visa saga has become one of the biggest controversies of the season. The trail began in the last season when the player applied for a medical exemption from the covid vaccine. For some months the matter was cold as the Australian Open authorities denied the application. But at the start of the 2022 season, the authorities finally granted the Serb exemption from the vaccine and the player flew to Melbourne.

But the border force did not allow him to enter because of insufficient vaccination details. He was isolated and questioned at the airport for nine hours. Later his visa was cancelled but he made an appeal on it but it was also rejected on 10th January. With the series of events that followed it, Novak’s visa is cancelled for the second time and he has now been deported back to Serbia.

Many tennis experts and former players expressed their views on Novak’s saga. One of them is Tim Henman. Tim is a former British professional tennis player. His highest ATP ranking was World No.4 and he had 11 singles titles and 4 doubles titles.

Tim said how the visa saga should have been solved before Novak’s arrival in Melbourne. He thinks the government handled the matter badly. “All these grey areas could’ve and should’ve sorted out long before he actually arrived at border control in Melbourne. It’s not whether you’re the best tennis player in the world, if you’re very famous or very wealthy, these are the rules for Australia. I don’t think the government seem to have handled it very well.”

He also mentioned some of the important aspects of being a professional tennis player. “The one point I would make is that to be a professional tennis player, there are certain things you need to do. Travelling is one of them, if you don’t like it, professional tennis is going to be difficult. The reality is looking at the vaccination, if you want to play professional tennis, it’s a global sport, you need to get vaccinated.”

Although he did say that getting vaccinated is a person’s own choice. If an individual doesn’t want to get vaccinated that decision should be respected. But he thinks Rafael Nadal rightly quoted on Djokovic’s matter that ‘decisions have consequences’.
