IPL 2020: How Axar Patel became Delhi Capitals’ unsung hero
Axar Patel
No one expected Axar Patel to play almost all the matches for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. With quality spinners like Ravi Ashwin and Amit Mishra already in the side, and Sandeep Lamichhane warming the bench, it was always going to be difficult for the spin bowling-allrounder.
But with early injuries to Ashwin followed by that for Mishra, Axar Patel got regular chances at the DC camp. He went to make the most out of them, turning out to be an unsung hero. He contributed in whatever way the team asked him to do in all three departments of the game.
Axar Patel is playing the role of a finisher when it comes to batting at the death overs for the side. In the bowling department, he bowls at the crucial times for the Capitals including the powerplay. So far in eight matches, Patel gas scored 56 runs off just 32 deliveries at a strike rate of over 175. On the other hand, he has seven wickets to his name at a tremendous economy less than six runs per over.

His numbers in this season clearly show that he has turned out to be a genuine utility player for the Delhi-based franchise.
Shreyas Iyer lauds Axar Patel
Delhi Capitals registered an emphatic victory over Chennai Super Kings in their previous game last game. Axar Patel helped his team chase 17 runs in the ultimate over after hitting three sixes off Ravindra Jadeja. After the match, DC skipper Shreyas Iyer also appreciated the efforts of the 26-year old.
“I was sitting inside, and I was pretty nervous. I knew if Shikhar stayed till the end, we would win, but the way Axar came out and hit those sixes, it was brilliant. Whenever we give out the dressing room Man of the Match awards, he is always there. You see his preparations, they are always on point,” said Iyer during the post-match presentation ceremony.
