IPL 2020: ‘It’s good to take responsibility sometimes’ – Gautam Gambhir slams Dinesh Karthik for giving up captaincy

Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has lambasted Dinesh Karthik for giving up captaincy midway through the season. KKR had won 4 matches out of 7 in the first half of the Indian Premier League. They looked to be the favorites to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot.
This was when Karthik gave up captaincy to Eoin Morgan in order to concentrate on his batting. After Morgan’s taking over, KKR have managed to win just 2 matches out of the next 6. They are now staring down the barrel at the prospect of missing out on the playoffs. The change in captaincy has not exactly worked wonders and in terms of results, has actually been detrimental for the team. There were various questions plaguing Karthik’s captaincy, the same questions have carried forward to Morgan’s captaincy and Brendon McCullum’s coaching as well.
‘It just shows the mindset’ – Gambhir slams Karthik
Gautam Gambhir spoke about KKR’s change in captaincy midway to cricket.com and said “It just shows the mindset. You left captaincy because you wanted to concentrate on batting, but then it hasn’t worked, so probably sometimes it’s good when you take up responsibilities. What I’ve realized when I was through a worse phase in 2014. I got three ducks in a row when we started the tournament. It was captaincy that helped me that I could get back into form.”
Gambhir adduced his own example as to how he overcame a tough phase during his time as captain of KKR. “The reason why because when I was not batting, I was thinking about how to make the team win through my captaincy and the decision making. But when you’re not captaining, you’re thinking even more about your batting,” he added.
KKR are currently at the 6th spot on the points table. They face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday in Dubai.
