IPL 2020: Karim says global cricket still needs an icon like Dhoni

Former Indian wicket-keeper Saba Karim has said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to continue playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a good news for circket and that global cricket needs an “icon” like him to continue.

The 13th edition of IPL, which will be played across three venues — Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai — is set to kick off from September 19th. After retiring from international cricket, IPL remains the only tournament where fans can witness the guile of Dhoni’s captaincy and his batting prowess.

Cricketing world needs an icon like MSD to continue

On 15th August, 2020, when India was celebrating Independence day, Dhoni took to Instagram to announce his retirment, sending ripples across the cricket fraternity. Although, it was clear that the 39-year-old will continue representing for his franchise.

Karim was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency:“He is very fit and I believe he is working very hard on it. Plus he has stopped playing international cricket so there will be less burden on his body. Global cricket still needs an icon like MS Dhoni to continue.”

Dhoni looks in good touch at the moment and is seen smashing the ball out of the park during training sessions. Although, the exit of important players — Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh — may put him in a spot of bother. But Dhoni is known for his captaincy skills and will look to clinch the IPL title for the fourth time.

CSK will begin their IPL 2020 campaign against Mumbai Indians on September 19th in Abu Dhabi.
