Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik won the toss against Chennai and decided to bat first in the 21st match of the ongoing season of Indian Premier League. Interestingly, this was the first time the Kolkata-based franchise has opted to bat in an IPL fixture since the 2015 edition of the tournament. The last time KKR batted first after winning the toss was during a game against Delhi way back on May 7, 2015.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman called it right as their side went on to clinch a victory in the game. Moreover, he also announced that his side remains unchanged from their previous game.

“We’ll bat first. In the last two games when we batted first we did a good job. We have gone back to the drawing board to see what we can do. We’re playing the same XI,” Karthik said at the toss.

Knight Riders register victory over Chennai Super Kings

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Chennai Super Kings by ten runs after a splendid effort by KKR to defend 167 runs. CSK looked like cruising towards another victory after 90/1 in the first ten overs. However, Kolkata bowlers foiled their plans and held CSK for 157/5 at the end of the match.

Rahul Tripathi emerged as the solo performer for his side with a knock of 81 runs including eight 4s and three 6s. Chasing 168, Shane Watson brought up his 21st IPL half-century. MS Dhoni too promoted himself to number four after a fifty run partnership by Watson and Rayudu at 99/2. Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Dhoni in the 17th over, and the match began to fade away from CSK.

Ravindra Jadeja played a few shots in the final two overs, but it was already too late, and CSK fell short by ten runs.
